Christmas in Scotland

In Scotland, traditional Christmas celebration is usually quiet as the Church of Scotland, which is the Presbyterian Church, does not think much about the festival of Christmas. Scots who are the members of other churches such as the Church of England, also keep it quiet as English often do not approve loud noise and riotous behavior. However, Scottish people do have some interesting customs and traditions. It is believed that if the fire goes out on Christmas Eve, the household will suffer bead luck in the coming year.

Mischievous elves climb down the chimney and cause troubles in the family. However, a raging fire can scare them away. On Christmas day, people lit big bonfires, play bagpipes and dance around the bonfire. Traditional oatmeal cakes known as Bannock are eaten on this day. The main celebrations take place on New Year's Day, known as 'Hogmanay'. Then, there is lot of music, singing, dance, games and feasts in general.
